ACJS/DCC Issues

Crit Crim People – As the Chair of the ASC Division on Critical Criminology and the Chair of the ACJS Section on Critical Criminology, we thought that we should put out a joint letter to keep you up to date on a variety of issues.
In the first place, there was some incorrect information given out over the past year about the relationship between the Division and the Section. The most important was that the officers of the Division were automatically officers of the Section. If they were, then of course they would have to be ACJS members and pay dues. However, by the simple mechanism of checking the ACJS Section constitution, it turns out that this is not the case. In fact, there is only one ACJS Section officer at all: the Chair. At the business meeting of the ACJS Section in March, Martin Schwartz was elected Chair for 2008 of the Section. It was decided to make this a one-year term, so that a broader nomination committee could involve the broader membership in an election in time for the next chair to be seated at the 2009 ACJS meetings in Boston.
With this resolved the next step is to turn to other issues. The Section empowered Schwartz to discuss these issues with the Division. It is clear that the point of view of the Section is to try to maintain the status quo. Since all members of both groups are critical criminologists with similar or equal concerns, this would mean that both groups would have access to the listserv, and both groups would purchase Critical Criminology from Springer for their own members. Part of the reasoning here is that the strength of the journal is enhanced by a larger number of subscriptions. If the Section withdrew its members from subscribing to the journal there is nothing good that could come of this. The ASC Division, however, would still choose the editors and editorial board.
The Section also proposed that both groups would set their own dues, and there would be no commingling of funds. While it is possible that the groups would co-sponsor various things (or not) this would depend on future officers and members to decide. Since it is now electronic and thus free, the Section would like to have its members receive the Critical Criminologist also, and to be able to contribute to it. Again, the Division would be in charge, and appoint the editors.
Thus, the next step is for the ASC Division to decide these same issues. At least from the point of view of the Section, it simply means just doing what we have done in the past, with no future coordination unless the groups wish to have it.
