Tenure Track Position: City Planning

General Information:
San Diego State University, with an enrollment of 34,000 students is, one of the 23 campuses in the California State University System. San Diego State University is a major intellectual, cultural, and educational institution serving the greater San Diego area and in 2007 was ranked the top small research university in the United States by the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. The University offers bachelor degrees, in 81 areas, master degrees in 73 and the joint doctorate in 16. Public Affairs:
The newly reconstituted School of Public Affairs within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts contains three programs: public administration, criminal justice and city planning; each program offers a master’s degree. Criminal justice and public administration also offer bachelor’s degrees with combined enrollment of over 1200 students. City planning is also offered as a concentration in the master’s of public administration and as an emphasis in the bachelor’s of public administration. The School of Public Affairs emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community, the university, and the discipline.

Position Description (City Planning/Public Policy/Social Ecology)

The School of Public Affairs is requesting a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the areas of physical planning and public policy with the ability to teach courses in areas such as social ecology, urban inequality, urban policy and community crime prevention. The faculty member will teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and contribute to at least two programs within the School of Public Affairs: city planning, criminal justice, or public administration. The position complements and enhances the School’s goal of community connectedness and requires an individual who has the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment. The School of Public Affairs emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community, the university, and the discipline. Professional activities and publications in the applicant's area(s) of expertise are required for tenure and promotion.

Qualifications:
Applicants with a doctoral degree in city planning or a closely related field are preferred; candidates with ABD status will be considered but the doctoral degree must be completed before the effective date of appointment. Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of publications, and the potential for program development, and grant writing ability, with clear leadership potential in each of these areas being an asset. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Application review will begin on September 15, 2007 and will continue until the position is filled.
